Option to Stay
Instructor: Mrs. Newmister & Ms. Baum

WELCOME to Ms. Baum's & Mrs. Newmister's
Option to Stay class page!

Our class meets daily from 11:00 - 3:30 and is a mixed group of children from 3 to 5 years old who attend a preschool or Pre K class in the morning. Our class has co-teachers, Ms. Kari Baum and Mrs. Cyndi Newmister, who are thankful to work in such a beautiful faith-based center. Our curriculum is driven using Illinois State Early Learning Standards adding religion and an emphasis on good classroom manners. Our goal is to provide a positive and fun environment that allows children to grow socially/emotionally, physically, academically and spiritually!
We serve a balanced lunch delivered by Redbird Catering and eat together practicing good table manners. After a full hour of rest time we move our bodies while we participate in a large motor activity or during free play in the gym or outside then we have story time and a healthy afternoon snack is provided.
Knowing that a child’s play is important for development and learning, we provide opportunity for them to explore and interact with classmates during center time which include dramatic play (dress up/grocery/kitchen/tool bench), reading, puppet show, math & puzzles, science & blocks, art, or Smart board. Children rotate between all centers during a week.
We split into several small groups for theme-based enrichment activities and teacher lead stations and rotate.  We end our class with a fun large group activity (music with instruments, movement songs or stories).
After-care with Epiphany grade school kindergarten students begins at 3:30. We play in the classroom or gym and go outside to the playground, weather permitting.  All children are picked up before 5:30.

Gardening & Nutrition
Children will gain knowledge about how to become more nutritious. They will also learn about the needs of living things. Ots will understand that reading progresses from left to right and top to bottom. They will identify some letters, including those in their name. They will continue to solve simple mathematical problems and use scientific tools such as balance scales and magnifying glasses for investigation.

Rest Time
One hour of rest time is mandated by the state of Illinois. We keep our bodies quiet on comfortable cots with lights dim and music playing softly. We provide cozy blankets and they are kept with your child's cot all week and washed every Friday.

Lunch
Monthly menus will be sent home with your children. Redbird Catering delivers a complete meal every day and strives to prepare child friendly food choices. We serve 2% milk or water to drink. We keep ketchup, mustard, ranch dressing, and bbq sauce in our kitchen. The children sit together at a large table, begin with a prayer, and practice using good table manners.
2016/2017 FOOD ALLERGIES: This is a peanut - tree nut free school! Please keep this in mind when packing your child's lunches! Thank you!
